Addis Ababa, September 27, 2024 (FBC) – Tourists from around the globe were captivated by the recent celebration of Demera, the eve of the UNESCO-inscribed Meskel festival, which showcases Ethiopia’s rich religious and cultural heritage. Held on September 26, the festivities were adorned with colorful Orthodox traditions and communal spirit.

A Vibrant Celebration of Faith and Culture

The Demera celebration marks the discovery of the True Cross, the symbol upon which Jesus was crucified. In Addis Ababa, the heart of the festivities was Mekel Square, where thousands gathered in the evening. Dressed in white robes and traditional attire, participants included church followers, Sunday school students, and clergy, creating a visually stunning and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.

Tourists who attended the bonfire celebration, a hallmark of the Meskel festival and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s largest open-air religious event, were mesmerized by the sights and sounds surrounding them. The large gathering, vibrant choir performances, and the ceremonial lighting of the massive bonfire made for an unforgettable experience.
